Halitosis: When You’ve Tried Everything, Is There Anything Left?

We all have been victimized with bad breath . Sometimes just a quick brushing or gargling mouthwash can help end it. But in some cases, that is not enough. There are ample of other ways to fight halitosis other than the traditional methods.
If you happen to be the person with bad breath (halitosis), after you’ve tried the usual recommendations, you might notice some reduction in bad breath. But it is not unusual for these remedies to last only for a short time. Some remedies may provide even better reductions in bad breath then others. If this is one of your struggles, try some of my recommendations and see if you notice any improvements with your bad breath:

Try brushing your teeth with a combination of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. You will feel the hydrogen peroxide start bubbling in your mouth because it is adding oxygen. Adding oxygen can kill the anaerobic bacteria living in the mouth where no oxygen is located. Always remember to brush the back of your mouth as well. This kills the bacteria (odor) in the back of the mouth where the odor originates from. If you don’t happen to have access to hydrogen peroxide, even just a simple swish and spit with plain water can help, by loosening any food particles that remain stuck in the teeth after a meal. However baking soda can be so effective, many toothpastes now contain baking soda as an ingredient.

Food habits can be the main source for bad breath. It is due to degradation of protein by the bacteria and all food products rich in protein favors bad breath. Meat, fish, milk products, eggs, cakes, nuts, and etc. can cause bad breath . Some food particles can produce particular type of smell which may be unpleasant. Raw onions can produce typical bad smell. It is said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, a raw onion a day keeps everybody away. Eating ground nuts can also produce bad smell. However if proper cleaning is done smell can be reduced regardless of the nature of food. Irregularity in timing of food can also produce bad breath. Small food articles taken in between the meals can also produce bad smell.

Causes of Bad Breath Part 1

Gingivitis can cause bad breath. The gum is a mucus membrane with supporting connective tissue covering the tooth bordering the jaw. The main function of the gum is protection. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum. When the gum get infected it will become swollen, painful, and have a discharge. If the condition become worse the infection will spread towards the periodontal (tissues that surround and support the teeth) area leading to continuous discharge called pyorrhea. Some times the infection goes deep producing alveolar abscess with discharge of pus. Infection can even reach the bone causing osteomyelitis (inflammation or infection of the bone or bone marrow). This can cause bad breath.

Everyone Has Bad Breath

People who suffer with bad breath often find it difficult to have a normal life. The offensive odor from the mouth is extremely unpleasant to those who come in close contact with them. The problem could eventually become psychological trauma which can lead to depression. The sufferers from this problem usually isolate themselves from the society. This can even lead to marital disharmony. Honestly, everyone suffers from bad breath sometimes. The mouth contains millions of anaerobic (without air) bacteria which acts on the protein of food materials and purifies them which causes bad odor. If oral hygiene is not maintained properly we all will suffer from bad breath. Most of us control this by regular brushing, tongue cleaning and gargling. Even after maintaining cleanliness in the mouth some individuals suffer from offensive smell due to various causes which has to be diagnosed and treated properly.
